The Coaching Habit

Rating: 3.5/5

Full disclosure, I was fortunate enough to get sent The Coaching Habit by Michael’s team over at Box of Crayons Press. It’s a pretty quick read with some interesting points. The book details seven specific questions to use with coworkers and how to use them effectively to “work less hard and have more impact.” I’m always interested in coaching habits and how to improve 1-1’s with team members. The book caused me to think pretty deeply about how I coach people on my team currently. I’m not spoiling anything by sharing the seven questions:

  1. What’s on your mind?
  2. And what else?
  3. What’s the real challenge here for you?
  4. What do you want?
  5. How can I help?
  6. If you’re saying Yes to this, what are you saying No to?
  7. What was most useful for you?

The questions, in and of themselves, don’t present much use. Michael provides a framework around how to use these questions to get the biggest benefit. In particular, I think #6 can be a game changer.
